Scent Detection Classes
With Christina Legien of Alert K9
Join us for an exciting new class that is fun and rewarding for both you and your dog brought to you by Christina Legien of Alert K9.
Christina brings years of experience in scent detection, teaching all levels of classes, competing at all levels with her own dogs and is a certified SDDA judge.
Scent detection, is a dog sport created to emulate tasks performed by professional detection dogs. In the sport, one dog and one handler form a team where the dog must find a hidden target odor, often ignoring distractions such as food or toys, and alert the handler once the target odor is found.
Your dog will learn to search for specific odors, such as Wintergreen, Pine and Thyme essential oils.
Scent detection is easy to teach and you don't have to be a skilled dog handler to do it! It is also an easy sport to practice at home and is great for mental stimulation, especially on days we can’t physically exercise our dogs outside
You can do it for fun or you can compete and earn titles with your dog! How far you go is up to you!

A dogs nose has up to 300 million olfactory receptors, compared to the six million a human has. The part of the dogs brain that analyzes those smells is 40 times greater than a humans. This means a dogs nose is powerful enough to detect substances at concentrations of one part per trillion, that is equal to a single drop of liquid in 20 Olympic sized swimming pools!
